Protein oxidation and lens opacity in humans.

PURPOSE Oxidative damage to lens proteins is a major factor leading to cataract formation. It is of pathogenic importance to determine a threshold of protein oxidation over which opacification of the lens takes place. METHODS Sixty-two lenses extracted from patients affected by idiopathic senile, diabetic, or myopic cataract were studied. Clear lenses were obtained from subjects undergoing en...

Aminoaciduria and megaloblastic anaemia.

Urinary amino-acid chromatograms from 23 patients with megaloblastic anaemia have been studied before and after therapy. The most consistent abnormality was an increased taurine or increased taurine/glycine ratio. This was not related directly to deficiency of vitamin B(12) or folic acid or to the degree of anaemia.

Preventive effect of chlorogenic acid on lens opacity and cytotoxicity in human lens epithelial cells.

The present study reveals the pharmacological effect of chlorogenic acid, a major phenolic compound in plants, food, and coffee, on diabetic cataracts. Chlorogenic acid examined the inhibitory effects upon rat lens aldose reductase (AR) activity and xylose-induced rat lens opacity. The effect of chlorogenic acid on high glucose-induced cytotoxicity in lens epithelial cells was also examined. Ch...

TAT-mediated PRDX6 protein transduction protects against eye lens epithelial cell death and delays lens opacity.

A diminished level of endogenous antioxidant in cells/tissues is associated with reduced resistance to oxidative stress. Peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6), a protective molecule, regulates gene expression/function by controlling reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Using PRDX6 protein linked to TAT, the transduction domain from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 TAT protein, we demonstrated that PRDX6 ...

Lens opacity based modelling of the age-related straylight increase

This work studies ethnic and geographical differences in the age-related straylight increase by means of a stochastic model and unpublished lens opacity data of 559 residents of Villa Maria (Argentina), as well as data of 912 Indonesian subjects published previously by Husain et al. For both cohorts the prevalence of each type and grade of lens opacity was determined as a function of age, from ...
